The International Society for the History of Arabic and Islamic Science and Philosophy (SIHSPAI) was founded in 1989 at the International Colloquium on the History of Arabic Science and Philosophy held in Paris on November 22 25, 1989.

Since then, five other international meetings have been held: one from March 31-April 3, 1993, again in Paris at both the Institut du Monde Arabe and the UNESCO headquarters; one in Washington, D.C. from March 28-30, 1996 in conjunction with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Middle East Section in the Library of Congress; one in Cordoba, Spain from December 8-11, 1998, and another in Carthage, Tunisia from November 28-December 2, 2000. The last one took place from January 9-11, 2003 in Namur and Brussels, Belgium. The next meeting is scheduled for February 16-18, 2006, and the site is Florence, Italy.

The Society has, as resources permitted, published the proceedings of these meetings.

The Society currently has 130 members. It is important to note that SIHSPAI counts among its members both numerous internationally renowned authorities and young scholars whose contributions have attracted critical acclaim.

While the timing of the decision by the Society's founders to launch SIHSPAI was opportune, it should be borne in mind that its success was hardly assured from the outset. Two barriers in particular had to be overcome. The first has been the automatic resistance within the field to any new initiative of this nature for fear of reproducing the work of already existing institutions. The second has been the refusal of some to accept the possibility of historians of science and historians of philosophy collaborating fruitfully within the same organization. Thus, SIHSPAI represents a two fold gambit on the part of its founders, whose hope is to open up these sometimes insular intellectual disciplines to the currents of universal history. At the same time, part of SIHSPAI's mission is to contribute to the development of a history of science which is not rigidly "technical" in nature and the development of a history of philosophy which explores philosophy as a rigorous discipline.

Members of SIHSPAI are entitled to a special subscription rate for the scholarly journal, Arabic Sciences and Philosophy : A historical journal. To date, 15 volumes have been published.

The Society also regularly publishes its Newsletter..

Finally, SIHSPAI holds an International Colloquium every two years.

La Société internationale d'Histoire des sciences et de la philosophie arabes et islamiques (SIHSPAI) a été fondée en 1989 lors du Colloque international d'Histoire des sciences et de la philosophie arabes se tenant à Paris, du 22 au 25 novembre de la même année.

Jusqu’à présent, cinq autre colloques internationaux ont eu lieu: celui du 31 Mars- 3 Avril, 1993, encore une fois à Paris à l’Institut du Monde Arabe ainsi qu’au siège de l’UNESCO; celui du 28-30 Mars, 1996 à Washington, D.C. qui fêtait aussi le 50e anniversaire de l’ouverture de la section pour le Moyen Orient à la Bibliothèques du Congrès; un autre à Cordoue, Espagne du 8-11 Décembre, 1998; ainsi que celui à Carthage, Tunisie du 28 Novembre-31 Décembre, 2000. Le dernier colloque a eu lieu du 9-11 Janvier, 2003 à Namur et Bruxelles, Belgique. Le prochain s’annonce pour le 16-18 février, 2006 à Florence, Italie.

Dans la mesure du possible, la Société a publié les actes de ces colloques.

La Société compte actuellement 130 membres. Il convient de remarquer en outre que parmi ces membres, figurent des chercheurs internationalement reconnus et de jeunes chercheurs dont les premiers travaux ont été remarqués. La Société occupe ainsi une place intermédiaire entre une Académie et une association "corporative".

S'il est certain que les initiateurs du projet de cette Société ont su saisir le moment opportun, le succès de l'entreprise n'était pas du tout assuré. Et cela pour deux raisons au moins. La première est la résistance à toute nouvelle association dont on craint qu'elle ne fasse double emploi avec des institutions déjà existantes. La seconde tient au refus de certains à voir se côtoyer dans une même corporation historiens des sciences et historiens de la philosophie. Les fondateurs de la Société ont fait, de ce point de vue, un double pari : en regroupant histoire des sciences et histoire de la philosophie arabes, ils espèrent désenclaver ces deux disciplines et les ouvrir aux courants de l'histoire universelle ; dans le même temps, ils œuvrent pour le succès d'une histoire des sciences qui ne soit pas étroitement " technicienne " et une histoire de la philosophie qui considère celle ci comme une discipline rigoureuse.

Les membres de la SIHSPAI ont droit à un tarif spécial pour la revue Arabic Sciences and Philosophy : A historical journal. Jusqu’à présent, 15 volumes ont été publiés.

La Société publie aussi régulièrement une Newsletter.

Elle organise tous les deux ans un Colloque international.
